Ubuntu 20.04 LTS is here to stay
On April 23rd, ubuntu released the latest major LTS update. First of all the name is better than “Bionic Beaver”. I wouldn’t say Focal Fossa is a good name but it is better. The focus for this release is performance and stability. I took the desktop version for a quick testdrive today. I am going to wait for updating my servers for some time. We have been very happy with Xenial.
There last major LTS update was called Bionic Beaver. The name was kind of fitting for the server version like this little automated rodent is tirelessly tunneling in and out of everywhere. But for a desktop OS the name was tacky even suggestive of something we are not going to mention.
The main features, that we are excited about are:
- Major Kubernetes security update – Now you can avoid rootkits with Secure Boot
- WireGuard – A new VPN with modern Cryptography defaults. The best part about wireguard is that it can be backported to 18.04
- Nvidia CUDA software stack – Those working on AI will be impressed with the ease of use of running CUDA
